| Today we are taking a virtual trip through time.For to visit the Barbary Coast in Modern Times we would have to visit Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya.Which would be an interesting trip, but what we want to think of today is Pirates.Aye Matey, we want to offer you Pirates to write about.From the times of the Crusades until the early 19th century, pirates ruled a section of Africa and did not allow much settlement.This area became a mysterious place in most peoples imagination.From their stronghold was along the stretch of northern Africa.Pirates attacked ships and coastal settlements in the Mediterranean and North Atlantic and captured and traded slaves from Europe and sub-Saharan Africa.The great Pirate city of Algiers was the last hold out and was not truly tamed until it was conquered by France in 1830.?Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe, The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, pre, The Sea Hawk and the Sword of Islam by Rafael Sabatini, The Algerine Captive by Royall Tyler, Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian, the Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson, The Walking Drum by Louis Lamour, Doctor Doolittle by Hugh Lofting.Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes are some examples of Pirates in literature.?Pirates of the Caribbean were different from pirates of Barbary Coast!Pirates of theCaribbean worked for Kings and Queens! |
