The Media: Uber-bias? (Updated) |

So, the big story circulating right now is the capture of a murderous psychopath. He's responsible for not only the death of thousands, but also the destruction of important religious shrines, the (actual) torture and execution of scores of innocents (including children), and inciting civil strife among a populace that has been integrated for centuries.Let's look at how the media is covering it:
First we have FoxNews:I screencapped these at a little past 10PM.In the interest of accuracy and fairness, note that the tabs consist of all three major news outlets and were taken at the same time.Anyway, what we have here is FoxNews, that biased, hate-filled reporting agency of the vast right-wing conspiracy, reporting on the capture of one of the worst scumbags alive in the world today.Obviously, they think it's important enough to make sure people know what's going on, and that it is a success. |
Obviously, they think it's important enough to make sure people know what's going on, and that it is a success.Surely with a story this big, everyone would be on it.Let's look at CNN:CNN doesn't think al-Masri's mugshot should be shown on their front page.Instead, they show a broken down old house where another psychopath murdered a bunch of people.Maybe they think the leading story should be about an American mass-murderer instead of an Egyptian terrorist mass-murderer?MSNBC: |
MSNBC:Reporting on the cyclone?Yeah, it sucked, but it has little affect on Americans. As we see here, LeBron James ranks higher in the importance factor than the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq. They DO cover it though, but it's further down in the "world" section:Still, two stories about a cyclone on the other side of the planet rate higher than the capture of an elusive terrorist leader with a $5 million bounty on his head. Now, I'd like to just look at the "Most Popular/Viewed" sections of these sites. |
Now, I'd like to just look at the "Most Popular/Viewed" sections of these sites. They give us an idea of what the readers of those sites think is important. We'll start off with MSNBC:Do we see "Terrorist Mastermind Caught"?No. We see a story about a Congressman's love child (who cares), a gay bishop (again, who cares), and President Bush going down to Texas to Jenna's wedding. This is CNN:Again, we have a Texas sinkhole, Charles Manson, and comic books ranking above the 6 story about al-Masri. |
Again, we have a Texas sinkhole, Charles Manson, and comic books ranking above the 6 story about al-Masri.Fox:What?!?!No terrorist stories?!?!?!Hey, at least they have it as their 1 story...and at least their most viewed story is relevant to the state of the country and the important issues that should be brought up with this election season: An illegal alien raped and impregnated a 10 y/o girl. So, I ask you, is this bias?***UPDATE***
8 hours later: It turns out it wasn't al-Masri after all. |
***UPDATE***
8 hours later: It turns out it wasn't al-Masri after all.Looking at the Big 3 at 6:40AM, the headlines have been changed, but are in roughly the same position. The only real notable difference is that MSNBC has THIS story in its "other news" panel at the top. |
